It’s a tough slog getting up the steep hill of Rue St Denis when exiting Montolieu – but nevertheless I decided to blow the cobwebs off my old bike and (literally) push myself to the max. Once I’d reached the lane that veers off to the left of the main road, I mounted the bike and headed along the gravel track.

I’ve walked this route many times to the old Napoleonic bridge that crosses the River Alzeau about a mile away, but hadn’t realised quite how steep, windy and slippery the path was. The ride alongside the river for the last few hundred yards was exhilarating, and stopping at ‘our’ place where we often swim was peaceful and rewarding.

I hadn’t brought a towel, and knowing how important it is to get dry and warm quickly after a dip, I held myself back from going in, despite very much wanting to. Instead I just sat there, immersing myself in the sound of the gushing water.

It was time to head back to The Writer’s Retreat, and I found the return ride was much easier, being mostly downhill. I’m now looking forward to the next time – and I’ll definitely be prepared for a cold swim too.
